R’fontein Show flashback: 1990 – 1993

This week we concentrate on the years 1990 to 1993.

With the Randfontein Show celebrating its 30th birthday in March the Herald is taking a look at its rich history.

Last week, the focus was on its existence. This week we concentrate on the years 1990 to 1993.

One Saturday afternoon during the Show in 1990, rain came pouring down. About 41mm of rainfall was measured that day.

Flashback 1990:

• Show office established at Greenhills Sport Stadium

• West Rand Strongman Competition held for the first time with 27 competing

• Dawn Rodel crowned Miss Randfontein Show

• The trophy for the best overall exhibition went to the Police

• 41mm of rain one Saturday afternoon could not stop people from entering the gates and enjoying themselves. People waded through water up to their knees but nothing stopped the Show

Flashback 1991:

• 4 May 1991 – Randfontein Festival Committee (as it was called), took hands with SA Police and won the Guinness World Record for the longest kebab (sosatie) on record. It was 400 metres long and the event took place in Main Reef Road in Randfontein.

Flashback 1992:

• Chimps tea party

• Seal Show – see pic attached. Seals from the Hartbeespoort Aquarium performed

• Ballyhoo pop group

• Len Ashton – balancing king of SA

• The Leprechaun Irish band

Flashback 1993:

• Show poster. This was a unique poster as it featured the Randfontein Rose, Lipizzaner Horse Show, Brahman cattle and the then main sponsor, Delmas Milling Company.

In the bottom left corner is part of the oil painting that was done especially by well-known local artist, Olga Hoffman.
