10 pack hacks for your festive vacation

From earrings through a button to shoes in a shower cap – a guide to travelling minimalism.

It’s that time of the year where many families pack their bags and trek to the beautiful destinations South Africa as well as other countries have to offer but every year is the all too well-known baggage battle.

You’re convinced you have to take everything humanly possible from your home to, well, temporarily set up home at your holiday destination but this festive season pack smart with a few of our favourite pack hacks.

Rolling instead of folding

Rolling your clothing takes up less space than folding it. So roll up those T-shirts and shorts and pack them like a circular puzzle.

Underwear packing for the ladies

Fold your bras in half and tuck your underwear inside the cups. Not only will this save you space, but it will help your bras maintain their shape. Men are welcomed to buy bras to pack their underwear in should they feel left out of this hack.

Use shoes as a bag within a bag

Roll-up your socks and put them in your shoes as well as small, loose items.

Belt-up your shirts

If you’re packing your Sunday best in case of a fancy dinner, you can wrap your belt in the inside of your shirt collar to save space and also to keep your shirt’s collar stiff. No shirt? You can also wrap your belt around the perimeter of your bag.

Cling film is not just for the kitchen

If you’re going to travel with shampoo and other cosmetics that could spill, cut a small section of cling film and put it on the top of an open bottle and seal it with its lid.

Necklace through a straw

Tired of packing your jewelry and having to spend half of your vacation untangling it? Try putting your necklace through a straw – it prevents the necklace from tangling.

Shoes in a shower cap

You’ve just been on the beach or went our hiking and you didn’t notice your shoes were full of all sorts of the elements and suddenly you have a bag full of laundry. You can place your shoes bottom side down in a shower cap to prevent them from mucking up the rest of your clothing.

Hairpins in a Tic-Tac container

The search for hairpins is endless when you’re on holiday. You’ve packed a brand new pack of pins but suddenly there’s only one right at the bottom of your suitcase tangled in your necklace.

Tic-Tac containers are not just for mint-fresh breath – an empty container can be quite nifty for hairpins. Put all of your hairpins in a Tic-Tac container to prevent them from littering your suitcase and from pulling a disappearing act.

Earrings through a button

If it’s not hairpins you can’t find on holiday it’s your favourite pair of earrings. To avoid them slipping into oblivion, put them through a button and guard that button with your life.
