Police: We are allowed to search your vehicle

'Contraband and drugs have been found in all sorts of containers in the past' – police.

During the festive season South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies embark on crime prevention activities to keep law-abiding citizens safe.

These crime prevention activities include roadblocks in the Randfontein area. An enquiry regarding vehicle searches by a concerned Herald reader stipulates that police officers are ‘going through lunch boxes, spectacle containers and the cubby hole’ at the roadblocks,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

Ernst made it clear the South African Police Service Act 68 of 1995 stipulates in Section 13 (8)(g) that, “Any member may, without warrant, search any person or vehicle stopped and any receptacle or object of whatever nature in the possession of such person or in, on or attached to such receptacle or vehicle, provided that the member executing a search shall, upon demand of any person whose rights are or have been affected by the search or seizure, exhibit to him or her a copy of the written authorisation by the Commissioner concerned.”

Contraband and drugs previously have been found in all sorts of containers. Therefore a search of the receptacles mentioned is necessary. The police urge community members to assist them with information. Anyone with information can contact the Crime Stop number – 08600 10111 or sms Crime Line – 32211 to report crime anonymously.

Assist the Gauteng SAPS to fight fraud, corruption, unethical behaviour or any other suspicious activities that could be detrimental to the police’s success by phoning the Gauteng Standby Provincial Duty numbers:

Duty General: 082 313 8299 or Duty Brigadier: 082 444 4354.
