New Measles vaccine available some time next year

'It is interchangeable with the current Rouvax vaccine.'

Yolandie Luther, assistant director of Expanded Programme of Immunisation and Communicable Disease Control based in Krugersdorp said a new Measles vaccine Measbio will be be replacing the current Rouvax vaccine some time next year.

It is interchangeable with the current Rouvax vaccine,” she said.

The Department of Health said there will be a change in the route of administration since Sanofi Pasteur, the current supplier of the Measles vaccine has ceased the production of their Measles vaccine, Rouvax.

Biovac Institute has registered a new Measles vaccine (Measbio) with MCC in South Africa which will be distributed to healthcare facilities.

This newly registered Measles vaccine cannot be co-administered with other childhood vaccines.

The Measles vaccine will be administered at six and 12 months. The new EPI Schedule as of 1 December 2015 is available on the website www.amayeza-info.co.za
