Fiancée of man killed in crash speaks out

'Christmas time is almost here, a special time for families but ours is broken.'

Chanel Joubert said Christmas will be painful without her fiancé, JL Boshoff who was killed by an alleged drunk driver in October.

Boshoff, 36, died tragically following a horror pedestrian accident on Lazaar Avenue in Homelake on Sunday 25 October.

It is believed he was walking home after he had spent the evening gambling at a nearby casino. As he was about to cross a busy road near a petrol station, a motorist allegedly skipped the stop street and hit Boshoff. The impact was so severe that he was flung into the air, bounced off the road and landed about three metres from the vehicle.

Boshoff succumbed to his injuries at approximately 2.55am the next morning. Allegations surfaced about the driver of the vehicle being under the influence of alcohol and driving recklessly.

A case of culpable homicide was opened against the driver.

Joubert says she is going through a tremendously hard time, where she feels sad and frustrated, angry and alone all at once.

She says, “Working keeps my mind of the sad reality of him being gone but at night, when we go to bed, our two year old son Jayden looks for his father.

All his belongings are exactly where they were left, his toothbrush. spray, everything. I cannot get myself to remove it. The other day our daughter passed her first grade, and I experienced it alone.”

Joubert continued, “Christmas time is almost here, a special time for families but ours is broken. The driver of the vehicle will spend his Christmas with his family and children, where our three children will be without their father.”

Joubert feels strongly that the driver should have been arrested that evening for driving under the influence. She has tried several times to get more information on the case, but she says it is hard to get information. Joubert has no vehicle, so she walks to the police station in hope that some conclusion has been reached.

Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police said, “These type of cases do take some time, as the postmortem reports are awaited from the pathology laboratory.”
