Randfontein warned: Woman, 57, robbed of R100 000

Stokvel groups to be aware.

The Randfontein Police have issued a warning to all stokvel groups in the area.

A stokvel is a savings or investment society to which members regularly contribute an agreed amount and from which they receive a lump sum payment.

The warning comes after a 57-year-old Diepsloot woman and three others were allegedly robbed of R137 438 soon after a cash withdrawal made from a Standard Bank in Diepsloot Mall, North of Johannesburg.

Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police warned stokvel association clients/ managers to refrain from making large cash withdrawals.

Police suggest that stokvel groups work out calculations before visiting the bank and request the bank to transfer money into each individual’s bank account as agreed by all.

Ernst said the crime rears its head every December and would like to make Randfontein residents aware of the matter. She says that Randfontein has not had any such cases but that prevention is better than trying to save the situation.
