Police investigating death at shack

Police: The body of the victim was discovered in his shack.

A fight at a local landfill site near Toekomsrus on Sunday 8 November resulted in the death of a 43-year-old man where his body was only discovered five days later, Randfontein Police said.

“It is alleged two males were involved in a fight that day where they both resided in the squatter camp at the landfill.

The reason for the fight is under investigation but it is alleged the victim was at some stage hit with an object on the head. The fight was dispersed by onlookers and the fighting men went their separate ways,” said Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police.

According to witnesses the victim did not seek medical help.

Five days later, on Friday 13 November, the body of the victim was discovered in his shack. No visible injuries could be detected but a murder case was opened due to the history of assault.

During the post-mortem it was established the victim did pass away due to the injury to his head. The suspect, a 41-year-old man was arrested and he appeared in the Magistrates Court last Wednesday for a bail hearing. The case was remanded to Thursday, 10 December.
