Fun with cherries in the Free State

Randmark Run, Walk and Cycle Club takes it easy for a change and ran a race just for fun.

Three runners from the Randmark Run, Walk and Cycle Club took a trip to Ficksburg in the Free State to take on the 23,4km Cherry Festival race.

The Cherry Festival is said to be South Africa’s oldest crop festival as the first one was held in 1968.

The event is one of the biggest in the Eastern Free State. The festival is not all about running, there is an array of cherry delicacies including cherry beer.

There is also a Cherry Jazz Festival where big names on the local music scene perform. The jazz festival is a one-day event that starts late in the afternoon and ends in the early hours of the morning. The Cherry Festival runs over three days.

The Randmark women ran the race but did not place high up in the rankings.

We placed close at the back. We went to have fun,” Karin Bezuidenhout, club spokesperson said.

Karin told the Herald they wanted to do the race last year but could not make it after having booked everything. They then arranged to have the accommodation booking transferred to this year, and off they went to enjoy the Cherry Festival.

“We stayed at the Walk about Estate, which was totally amazing. Our guys did some fishing, we bought plenty cherry beers and absolutely loved the race. It was very, very well organised.”
