New hijacking modus operandi surfaces

Is this alleged hijacking method real or a hoax?

A photo from an unofficial South African Police Service (SAPS) account has surfaced on Facebook showing how hijackers now target motorists.

The photo shows a hosepipe with nails through it being left in the road for motorists to drive over and get a flat tyre. As soon as the victim stops to investigate, hijackers strike. It seems they would follow their victims until they stop to check their tyres.

Judging from the response in the comments section below, various people did not believe the post was real saying it would take a long time for a tyre to become flat that way.

Others believe it was silly to underestimate thieves as they would go to any length to steal. One person claimed they had seen a similar incident on a dirt road.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson was asked if the Randfontein Police were aware of this or whether it is just a hoax to get people talking.

We have never heard of this and have not had any cases like this reported, but it is important for anyone to be careful of objects in the road,” Ernst said.
