Police issue festive season warning

Crimes such as robberies, housebreakings and thefts seem to be reported more frequently in the Randfontein area.

The Randfontein Police Management under the leadership of acting Station Commander, Colonel Tshidi Filita, identified the following issues that need to be brought under the attention of local residents.

“Crimes such as robberies, housebreakings and thefts seem to be reported more frequently in the Randfontein area. The increase might be due to the upcoming festive season since the criminal element is aware that cash is more readily available in this time.

Residents and business owners are therefore requested to refrain from keeping large amounts of cash on their premises,” said Filita.

Filita added, “Vehicle related crimes such as theft of a motor vehicle and theft from a motor vehicle may be prevented if the owners park their vehicles in safe areas and lock the doors and windows properly. If vehicles need to be parked outside, please insure the alarm system is activated and that valuables such as GPS devices, laptops and wallets are removed.”

Filita also warned motorists.

“This is the party season since most companies are having their Christmas functions. Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious matter and the local authority and police are clamping down on the drivers who are intoxicated.

When driving at night, please refrain from picking up hitchhikers since the possibility of hijacking cannot be ruled out. Be vigilant and keep doors locked and windows closed when stopping at controlled intersections.”

The South African Police Service calls on the help of the community members to assist them with information. Anyone with information can contact the Crime Stop number – 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line – 32211 to report crime anonymously.
