Petitions for street name signage launched

Councillor: Street name signs play an important role when it comes to road safety.

DA members of Ward 7, which falls under DA councillor Craig Harrison took to the streets of Randfontein to get signatures to support their quest to get the municipality to put up street names and paint them on the town’s curbs as well.

The Ward 7 team managed to get over 200 signatures for the age-old cause of signage and road markings. They cleverly did their campaign outside Pick n Pay in Helikon Park.

Street name signs play an important role in road safety. They enable motorists to identify intersecting streets easily without having to take their attention off the road for long periods, which puts themselves and other road users at risk,” said Ellik de Lange, PR councillor for Ward 5.

Many streets in Randfontein, especially in plot areas, do not have street names and on top of that, do not have curb markings to enable motorists and pedestrians to identify streets.

Most of the curbs that used to have street names on them were painted years ago and the paint has faded.

Furthermore, Harrison has been asking for street signs in his ward up at his IDP meetings since 2009.
