Police arrest 59 for breaking the law in one weekend

Crimes committed range from murder and drunken driving to attempted rape.

Bekkersdal Police have arrested 59 suspects during a weekend operation that started on Friday 6 November and ended on Monday 9 November.

The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, drunken driving, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, illegal mining, possession of stolen property and attempted rape to being in possession of unlicensed firearms,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane.

Other crimes included contravening a protection order, malicious damage to property and public intoxication.

All the suspects appeared before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Monday before last. The outcome is not yet known.
