JUST IN: Police officer airlifted to hospital

Witness: He was flung from the vehicle and landed head-first in a cement ditch.

An off-duty police officer believed to be a member of the West Rand Flying Squad has been airlifted to hospital following a collision on the corner of the N14 and the R24.

Two vehicles were involved and three were injured. The driver of the red car was badly injured but the passenger was less injured. The police officer driving the white bakkie was seriously injured. 

William Knight, member of Randfontein CPF Sector 4 said, “The police officer was in the bakkie and he was flung from the vehicle before landing head-first in a cement ditch. When we got on scene, we gave him emergency medical attention.”

Denver Ramnarian from Quick Response Services (QRS) later confirmed the helicopter was landing and the policeman sustained serious head injuries as a result of the crash.
