Municipality comes to light

Westonaria Municipality hands over solar lights to poor pupils for final exams.

The Westonaria Executive Mayor, Nonkoliso Tundzi donated 274 solar lights to matriculants to help them study for their final exams.

The handover took place on Sunday (25 October) at the Westonaria Local Municipality Banquet Hall.

The municipality held the event to support, motivate and wish the class of 2015 well in their final exams. However, the main aim of the event was to distribute solar lights to both formal and informal settlement pupils to enable them to study at night.

The event had the likes of Jacky Phamotsi, a motivational speaker and writer from Libanon, as well as Tebogo Tlhapi, a well-known engineer from Bekkersdal a guest speakers. Tebogo also gave matriculants an inspirational message and five books.

The expansion of the country’s power grid is vital for upgrading informal settlements and giving poor pupils the change to succeed. Though we have seen power outages have lessened, it is important that all pupils have alternative lights in the event of power cuts and outages,” said Nonkoliso.

She told matriculants always to trust in God.

“God won’t fail you. He will help you to attain the objectives you set for yourself. Never stop working hard in pursuing your dreams. You will make it. The onus is now on you to work hard and strive to achieve a 100 per cent matric pass rate.”

Last year the overall pass rate in Westonaria was 78,69 per cent.

It is not through my wisdom but by the grace of God that I am where I am today. Respect your parents. Respect your teachers. Always stay humble. Do not lose hope in life,” she said.
