Head-on crash leaves three critically injured

Paramedics and rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life to free the trapped patients.

A woman and two men have been left in a critical condition after a head-on collision on the Bank Road near Carletonville on Saturday.

“When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found the two vehicles on the side of the road. Both vehicles had sustained a large amount of damage in the collision,” said ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring.

On assessment, paramedics discovered a man and woman trapped inside their vehicle while another man lay trapped inside the second vehicle. All three patients were found to be in a critical condition.

“Paramedics and rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life to free the trapped patients. Once freed, paramedics treated the patients and provided them with advanced life support interventions.

“Once treated, the female patient was airlifted by medical helicopter to Baragwanath Hospital. The two male patients were transported by ambulance to Carletonville Hospital.”

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
