State hospital disappoints again

Woman allegedly attended to four hours after arrival.

A woman from Greenhills feeling ill allegedly had to wait for up to four hours before she was helped at a state hospital in Krugersdorp.

According to the woman’s husband, Willem Olivier, on Monday 12 October he rushed his wife to a state hospital at 9pm where she was only attended to at 1am the following morning.

“My wife came home from work that afternoon saying she felt very ill. She was dizzy and had a severe headache and complained she could not even see so she went to bed. At about 6pm I told her she looked very ill so we rushed to a state hospital in Krugersdorp. When we reached the hospital it was just before 9pm and she could barely walk,” Olivier said.

We walked past a queue of about nine patients so I decided to get her a wheelchair. I sat her down in the wheelchair but one of the assistants said she must get up and go sit in the line. By this time she was already busy slipping of the chair and after much debating her wheelchair arrived where Olivier pushed her back into the line. After two hours the queue was not moving and my wife was in extreme pain.”

Olivier then decided to speak to the person in charge and they allegedly took him to a matron who told him there was only two doctors on duty. They continued to wait in the queue where Ronel then had to make use of the toilet. When she came out she called Olivier to go have a look at the state of the toilets. To his disgust there was blood all over the seat of the toilet. This infuriated him even more.

At 12am they were still waiting in the line so Olivier once again returned to the matron. This time she walked back to the doctors room with Olivier and they eventually got help.

According to Olivier the doctor only attended to Ronel at 1am and no blood tests allegedly were taken. They gave her three injections and told her to sleep. She was extremely cold but they did not offer her a blanket so Olivier had to drive all the way back to Randfontein to get a blanket. The doctor told her she is suffering from stress related symptoms.

She was released from hospital at 6am and just to add fuel to the fire the reception allegedly asked them R20 to stamp the sick note.

The Herald is awaiting comment from this specific hospital.
