Mohlakeng youth shows off skill

Local development teams give it their all in six-a-side tournament.

The Mohlakeng netball and tennis courts recently hosted the first annual Kasi six-a-side soccer tournament.

Local development teams played in the under 13, 15 and 17 age categories. Six-a-side is a shorter version of the conventional 11-a-side full-ground soccer or football game that mostly focuses on players’ speed and skill. The duration of a game is six or seven minutes, some even 15 minutes. Sometimes it is played indoors.

The final Under 17 encounter between AB Phokompe and Sixth Avenue was tough and ended in a penalty shootout. AB Phokompe eventually won 5-3 on penalties. The under 15 game was won by Magalefa All Stars, defeating Mtojuadi All Stars 2-1.

We want to make this an annual and regular league for youngsters in our township and even take it to the entire Randfontein and West Rand. We have seen the enthusiasm for this new form of soccer,” said Thabiso Ntema Boom, event organiser.
