Ward 3 rising from the ashes

Councillor gets it right for his residents.

Ward 7 is not the only one getting upgrades as Ward 3 also is rising from the ashes.

Alwyn van Tonder, Ward 3 councillor recently got the go-ahead for upgrading the electricity network in Wheatlands. R2 million has been set aside for the upgrades.

Van Tonder said the project is just past the planning stages and the tender process will follow soon.

The Herald went with Van Tonder to have a look at the areas in Wheatlands earmarked for the upgrades. The area still has wooden electrical poles that became damaged over time by fire and wind.

One of the poles barely touched to the ground after it had been burnt badly. It was being held in position by another wooden pole tied to it. These poles will be replaced by concrete poles and the old copper wires will be replaced by aluminium wires. These new wires will be attached to the poles again but this time as bundle wires that would make for stronger support in the wind.

Van Tonder is very grateful to the Randfontein Local Municipality and to the electricity department in the municipality for allowing the upgrades.

This upgrade is but one of the many in the area recently. The large illegal dumping site at the Droogeheuwel Reservoir has been cleaned. The Herald had published an article some time ago to warn residents of the municipality taking action against those dumpers. In addition, the dump site has been barricaded to prevent vehicles from entering and dumping again.

In terms of roads, Road 7 (the Oval Track road) was repaired recently and road signs were put up. Road 6 that used to be a hazard to drive on with its moon crater-like potholes has been repaired as well. Speed bumps were another new addition to Johannesweg in Oosterplotte in just before a dangerous turn.

Things are looking up for Van Tonder and he is excited to accomplish much more in his ward to prove to residents they had made the right choice when he was voted in as councillor of the area.
