Resident in need of heart

Aspiring candidate steps in to help 33-year-old woman.

Eddie Krog, an aspiring DA candidate for the the 2016 local elections had his first information table – with a difference – this past weekend (Saturday 3 October).

Eddie’s purpose was twofold. He wished to create awareness around the 2016 local elections and about organ donations. He and his team also handed out Vision 2029 flyers, explaining what South Africa would look like after 10 years of DA governance.

Joining Eddie was Candice Eno, a 33-year-old Randfontein resident who desperately needs a heart transplant. The aim was to get support for her from the Randfontein community.

Candice has been waiting for a donor heart for the past 18 months. She suffers from a condition called Ebstein’s anomaly, which is an abnormality in the tricuspid valve of the heart.

Doctors said she would not live past the age of 10, but 23 years later she is still holding on and recently got engaged.

Her dream is to live a normal life, get married and possibly have children. Doctors told her that after three years of receiving a new heart, she might be able to have children. Eddie thought it important to raise some awareness about organ donation and that it is not as shady as some believe it to be.

According to the Organ Donation Foundation, one organ donor could help up to 50 people by donating corneas, skin, bone and heart valves.

There is no cost involved when signing up to be a donor and also no financial gain. However, knowing that you will give someone else the gift of life is a reward no money can buy.

Willie Murdock, who has had a heart transplant three years ago said organ donation and transplants are very delicate processes.

Its not just a matter of if someone dies you give someone else the organs. There is a long checklist everybody involved have to meet before anything could be done.”
