Couple allegedly burgled by acquaintances

'This should be an easy case to solve.'

A young Westonaria couple whose home was broken into while they were away on holiday is battling to get answers.

According to the resident who doesn’t want to be identified in fear of being targeted, he and his partner have not heard from the police in a month. They claimed police have the suspects’ address and photos of them but there has been no progress in solving the case.

He said they were on their way back home on Friday 10 July when they received a call that their garage was half open. They immediately contacted a co-worker to go and investigate, who found that two generators, a TV, laptop and a PlayStation allegedly had been stolen.

The co-worker told the couple he had noticed four young men in a vehicle of which boot had been removed. They were driving past the house slowly and when they saw the man looking at them, they pulled their tracksuit hoods over their heads. He also noticed them driving up and down the street a few times.

The couple said they were upset because the police took their statements only two weeks after the break-in and allegedly only tested for fingerprints around that time.

Frustrated the young couple decided to do their own investigation and claimed to have handed over photographs of four suspects – which they managed to get on Facebook – to the Westonaria Police. Allegedly the four young men live very close to them. One of the alleged suspects has a record of housebreaking and the other men have been in their house before.

The man added the robbers clearly had bigger plans as the dishwasher and refrigerators had been unplugged. The young couple is of the view that with the positive fingerprints and photos the police have, “This should be an easy case to solve.”

Another police captain has been assigned to investigating their case, but seems to have as little success as the first one who was supposed to solve their case. The first investigating officer allegedly had told them to let him know when they spot the suspects so he could follow up.

The Herald has not received an official statement from the Westonaria Police regarding the matter.
