Heritage Day meets Arbour Day at municipal event

The theme of this year's Arbour Month was Forests and people: Investing in a sustainable future.

The Randfontein Local Municipality recently planted trees in a new park in Kocksoord in celebration of Arbour Month.

After being initiated in 1983, Arbour Month has grown from strength to strength and has progressed from being a one-day event to becoming a month-long environmental awareness campaign.

The national theme of this year’s Arbour Month was Forests and people: Investing in a sustainable future.

This was focused on heavily at the Randfontein Local Municipality’s Arbour Day event. A speaker from Rand Water emphasised promoting knowledge about trees to future generations. The difference between indigenous and alien tress was covered and used as a prelude to Weed Buster Day when all alien plant life would be eradicated to help indigenous plant life thrive.

The tree-planting ceremony was started with speeches from various officials who helped to make the day possible. In between the speeches were performances by traditional dancers, gumboot dancers and choirs singing traditional African songs.

Most of the performers were dressed in traditional wear. During his speech one of the officials mentioned that like Arbour Day, Heritage Day also should become a month-long celebration.
