Scooter accident: Victim gives his version

Injured scooter rider receives R500 fine from traffic police

The rider of the scooter that was involved in a collision with a bakkie on 15 September near Hoërskool Riebeeckrand gave his version of what had happened.

This is how Mack Landsberg, 57, remembered the events that almost cost him his life.

“At approximately 2.20pm, my scooter T-boned a white bakkie. I was riding in the opposite direction in which the bakkie was travelling and when I turned left, the bakkie drove in front of me and I crashed into it. I fell and my scooter was left in the middle of the road where the bakkie hit me.

I got up, I walked to the sidewalk where I sat down and emergency services attended to me,” Landsberg said.

According to Gert Havenga, an eyewitness, “I watched the accident from the flats across the road. The man on the scooter was coming down the road about to cross the bridge when the white bakkie turned in front of the scooter. This in turn caused the man to fall off his scooter and slide to the side of the road.”

Havenga added the driver of the bakkie gave his details to authorities as is required. The driver also spoke to a Randfontein Traffic Police officer.

Landsberg was transported to Lenmed Hospital with various lacerations and a broken collarbone. He was discharged from hospital a day later.

I have not heard anything from anybody about this accident. Nobody has been here to see me, not even to take a statement from me,” Landsberg said.

He is annoyed that traffic officers came to his house the day after the accident, but only to deliver a fine of R500. They did not mention the accident and were not even aware of it.

It has been more than a week since my accident and I do not understand how they operate without a statement from me, or if they are investigating the accident at all,” a frustrated Landsberg said.

The Herald tried contacting the driver of the bakkie, but was unsuccessful.

Landsberg thanks the paramedic, Melanie Kleinhans and Gareth Robinson for all their help and support.
