Heritage Day fun at Grace Christian Academy

Pupils prepare their own traditional food and wear clothes of at least six different cultures.

Pupils from Grace Christian Academy cooked up a storm and were dressed to kill to celebrate Heritage Day on Wednesday 23 September.

“We thought of giving pupils the opportunity to dress up in their own culture’s traditional clothes. Also, we made it more interesting by having them cook their own traditional food. This is a wonderful way to celebrate Heritage ay,” said Bernadette Chaplog and Anthony Chaplog, owners of the school that was established in 2008 said.

This bilingual school prides itself in teaching pupils about the importance of knowing your heritage and to also teach them to take pride in it.

Estrolita Smiles, a Grade 2 teacher was the event coordinator on the day. Crace Christian Academy is a versatile crèche and school accommodating all races and several languages. Next year their classes will be up to Grade 9.

Everybody, even the teachers dressed up and the aroma of the Afrikaans pupils’ “pap and wors ” filled the air. The pupils also will receive marks for their traditional wear and the food they prepared.

The different cultures portrayed on the day were Zulu, Sotho, Afrikaans, English, Indian and Sepedi.

“I am enjoying this day a lot, and it is nice to dress up like a cowboy,” said 11-year-old Ethan Visage.
