Randfontein roads under construction

Are Randfontein's potholes being fixed more effectively?

You may have seen them driving to the store, they might have delayed you on the way to work or back home but they’re performing a necessary service.

Municipal workers have taken to the Randfontein’s streets in a bit to fix the potholes residents have been complaining about.

Previously, there was not a road that could be driven on in Randfontein but the Randfontein Local Municipality have been tending to the complaints resulting in Randfontein seemingly being under construction.

The change has come about shortly after Mzi Khumalo was elected as new mayor of Randfontein. One of the first acts as new mayor by Khumalo was to fix Randfontein’s roads.

The pothole most recently seen being fixed was one on Kenneth Road just outside the Herald’s offices.

When the Herald went to see what all the fuss and noise was about we spoke to Aaron Mthemba, a municipal worker who said his team has fixed many potholes in Randfontein and that more are still to be fixed.

“The other day we were busy in Robinson close to the Golf Club. We took the whole patch out and did it over. We also redid a whole road in Mohlakeng from scratch,” he said.

It has been noticed that the method of fixing the potholes have changed. More and more potholes are being fixed by removing the whole piece of road affected to prevent the problem from reoccurring. In previous cases, potholes were simply filled and had to be filled frequently due to re-occurrence brought on by rain.

The new method has been seen where municipal workers repaired the road close to the Golf Club, at the Greenhills-Homelake crossing and in Kenneth Road.

While there are many more potholes that still need to be fixed, progress is being made.
