R’fontein turns technicolour in running event

'I am doing this for peace, fun and togetherness' – Runner.

On Saturday runners painted the town red in a Colour Run at the Greenhills Stadium.

Hundreds of residents took part in the colourful event that has been dubbed the happiest 5km on the planet.

The race is a unique event that celebrates health, happiness and individuality. It’s a 5 km fun walk suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Whether you run, walk or push a pram, it is guaranteed fun for the whole family. Florah Maxeke, a runner said, “I am doing this for peace, fun and togetherness.”

The Color Run was founded in January of 2012 as an event to promote health and happiness by bringing the community together in an all colourful race.

The event is the original paint race which sparked new genre of running events that continues to grow at an exponential rate. They have more than tripled in growth, hosting more than 200 events in over 50 countries in 2013.

The Municipal Manager of the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM), Moroashike and Fana Hlazane from Zen One events, also joined in the fun.

Fana said the funds gathered from the event will go to various charities. Partners of the event are Capitec, The Color Run Organisation, Go West, and WRDM, Medihelp and Nashua.

There was great excitement in the air and a general felling of togetherness and happiness. This vibrant event marked the beginning of a beautiful summer ahead and under the holi powder and laughter a positive atmosphere was created.

How to make your own holi powder:

Mack Rapapali, MC and radio presenter at Jakaranda radio station was present at the event, keeping everybody in good spirits. He was also the event announcer for the day.

A father and is twin daughters took part in the race – they sat comfortable while their father pushed them along in their pram. Gabriel Silver, an entertainer from Miles & Smiles entertained the crowd with his impressive stilt-walking.

An of course, no event is complete without some form of safety – the Randfontein Traffic Police kept cars at bay while runners took to the streets.
