BREAKING NEWS: Teacher who lashed pupil with belt resigns

'We have already instituted a disciplinary process' – Gauteng Department of Education

The male teacher at Randfontein Secondary School who was caught on video hitting a pupil with a belt has resigned.

The pupil who was hit with a belt has since been reported absent by fellow learners.

The incident took place shortly after a teacher assaulted a pupil at the same school.

In the video the teacher was seen hitting a grade 9 pupil with a belt for apparently not completing his school work.

The Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Phumla Sekhonyane said, “The teacher implicated in the video has not reported for work since the matter was handed over to them, the teacher has simply been absent from school.”

Sekhonyane says they have since received his letter of resignation. “We have received the letter. We are considering it and will follow the normal due process.”

The Gauteng Department of Education replied to the Herald on Twitter saying, “We have already instituted a disciplinary process.”
