Westonaria goes green

Trees by the thousands for W'aria.

Women’s Month ended on a high note after approximately 1 000 trees were handed over to women of the new Westonaria Borwa Township.

The Westonaria Local Municipality (WLM) in partnership with AfricaGrow hosted the event at Westonaria Borwa Park.

They symbolically planted shading trees during this ceremony. It is believed the trees will provide natural benefits and improve the visual appearance of parks, cemeteries, road sides and households.

WLM received a donation of more than 2 000 trees from AfricaGrow and another batch of 1 000 trees was to be handed over and planted on National Arbour Day earlier this month.

Trees are the life blood of our environment. Trees are helpful in countering environmentally unfriendly actions we do on a daily basis to our planet.

“They also make our environment look appealing and inviting, and serve as a shelter to many animals. The municipality wants to provide an opportunity to residents who cannot afford to buy a tree to participate in planting a tree today and beyond,” councillor Nonkoliso Tundzi, Westonaria Executive Mayor said.

Tundzi added that trees bearing edible fruit could help to counter food insecurity and tree planting projects can help to boost the economy by providing jobs.

Subsequently, councillor Ana Gela, MMC for Social Development and Health said she believes trees are important.

We strive to maintain a healthy tree population in Westonaria Town. Please look after your trees by watering it. Prune it and they will provide healthy and beautiful places for children to play and learn. Trees also provide nutritious fruit to eat and they improve an area’s water quality,” Gela added.
