VIDEO: Car watch, 58, wears bikini

‘I see this as my job, an honest way to earn a living’ – car guard.

A 58-year-old female car guard brightened up a very cloudy day for residents and business owners in Randgate by dressing up in her Casual Day best.

Rain clouds hung over Randgate on Casual Day without a ray of sunlight, but this car guard watched over the parking area clad in a red wig with the torso of a female mannequin wearing a bikini strapped to her upper body.

This original outfit belonged to JJ van Staden who is a regular car guard in Union Street in Randgate. She said she has been a car guard for seven years and enjoys her job.

A lot of people say I beg but this isn’t begging. I don’t even borrow from people. I see this as my job, an honest way to earn a living. I mean, I don’t steal. I get by through God’s grace,” she told the Herald on Casual Day.

Not only does she watch cars and assist people parking, she also helps pedestrians cross the street.

This 58-year-old might seem in tip top shape for the line of work she is in, but she told the Herald she has had two strokes and visits the doctor regularly.

It’s just how it is. You just have to build a bridge, you know? I live here in Randgate. I like to stay home and out of trouble. If I’m not home or at the clinic, I’m here watching the cars,” she said.

When asked about the money she makes, she said, “We really don’t make R200 a day or whatever. Some days are good and some are bad. Sometimes I leave here with R65 and sometimes with R12.”

JJ said now that she has shared her story, she hopes people would stop being so stiff. She said, when she’s out there she’s working just like everyone else.
