Petrol attendant invades motorist’s space

Things get heated between motorist and attendant at local service station.

A petrol attendant’s rather unusual behaviour at a well-known local service station left a motorist in shock when the attendant allegedly attempted to grab his bank cards from his vehicle.

The service station cannot be identified as the Herald is awaiting comment from its manager.

Willem Olivier, the complainant claimed he had visited the service station one Sunday in August at approximately 1pm.

He had asked the attendant to put in R30 of petrol but when he wanted to pay, he realised he only had R20. He allegedly offered the attendant his wallet to keep as surety that he would bring the outstanding R10.

On second thought Olivier asked back the wallet, took out his bank cards and left only his driver’s licence. Olivier claimed the attendant then leaned into his car and tried to grab his bank cards.

The attendant’s action sparked a heated argument, which led to the attendant mocking Olivier and allegedly waving his drivers licence for everyone on the pavement to see.

When Olivier returned with the R10 he asked to see the manager. The manager was not in and at 4pm Olivier went back to the service station. He found the manager there and after Olivier had explained everything to him, he said he would get back to him.

Olivier asked him how he was going to reach him if he did not take his details. He gave it to the manager and told him he needed to have a look at the security video footage of Sunday’s events. The manager promised he would give him the opportunity but never came back to Olivier.

On Monday 31 August he returned to the service station and found another manager there. He asked her if the other manager has had a look at the video footage but she said she did not know. She asked him what he wanted her to do, and he said,

I need the footage and a response from your management.”

She said she could not give him the footage and there was no response from them.

The Herald went to the service station for comment, but the manager was not there. Despite leaving a business card with contact details and requesting urgent comment on the incident, none has been forthcoming.
