Great grandmother of 41 turns 105

Westonaria Local Municipality throws one of the oldest residents in the town a birthday bash.

The Westonaria Local Municipality held a birthday party for one of the town’s oldest woman who recently turned 105.

Susan Lekhooa turned 105 on Saturday (5 August). Granny Susan is from Bekkersdal. Her sister Angelique Pelele, 67, describes her as always being out and about. She says even at her age, she still does everything for herself.

She still cooks and cleans for herself. She does washing just like any other grandmother out there,” Angelique said.

One of the venues at the municipality was used especially for the birthday celebration. The entire hall was draped with white material. Tables were set with snacks and champagne to celebrate Granny Susan’s birthday.

Family members, friends and municipal officials joined in on the celebration to with one of the oldest residents another 105 years worth of birthdays.

Granny Susan had a total of 10 children. From those 10 she then became a granny of 36 and from those grandchildren she has become a great grandmother to 41 great grandchildren.

When the Herald asked what her sister’s secret was to such a long life she said Granny Susan used to be a domestic worker in her day and it seems that all the house work she used to do and now does for herself has kept her young.
