The footage of the attack went viral on Friday and shows the teacher pushing and slapping the pupil in full view of his classmates.

“The video is shocking,” Phumla Sekhonyane, GDE spokesperson said.

She added corporal punishment is unlawful in all schools in the country.

Educators are very aware of this and anybody who applies corporal punishment obviously will have to answer.”

The GDE is investigating the matter.

The person who took the footage and who wishes to remain anonymous for his own safety added, “He just went wild and punched them … you know, punched them down. These pupils were sworn at and some of their chairs were pulled. They became the laughing stock.”

The Herald was told this incident was not the first of its kind to occur at the school.

It is a daily occurrence. That is the way they deal with pupils who sometimes don’t agree with certain teachers.”

The Herald requested comment from school principal Winston Morris who said by law he is not allowed to comment.
