The cause of the problem is as a result of two pipelines (B7 and B8) at Zuikerbosch having tested positive for geosmin in the water.

Rand Water’s consumers may experience odour in the drinking water during the summer months due to the intermittant presence of geosmin,” Motlatsi Pule, Managers of strategic customer partnerships for Rand Water said.

Pule said the intensity of the odours is directly related to the increased amount of blue-green algae normally occurring on the surface water of the Vaal Dam during summer.

The problem is aggregated by the warm weather resulting in ideal growing conditions for algae. In addition, the varying water level of the dam results in the surface water containing large amounts of blue-green algae.

Pule said the odours can be persistent and are not effectively removed by conventional water purification processes. He characterises the problem as being infrequent and usually being of short duration. He further assures the compound is not harmful to human health.

Pule says if the issue increases in frequency and duration, necessary steps will be taken to correct the problem in due course.
