Copper thief caught in the act

'Copper theft an easy way to make money.'

A suspect allegedly was caught red-handed stealing copper and aluminium pipes from Cremos Cremations – a place where dead people are prepared for being buried or cremated.

William Brooks, a reaction officer at Mapogo Security recently spotted the suspect while patrolling the area.

According to Brooks,

The suspect entered the property by pulling down the barbwire and jumping over the fence. When he saw us, he began running away, but we caught him behind Randbricks.”

It is believed copper and aluminium theft is rising by the day and is becoming an easy way to make money. Copper is cheaper than gold but it is more plentiful, easily accessible and easy to sell at a scrap yard for an immediate return.

Copper is used for old pipes in plumbing and in wiring so it is readily available and easier to steal. Thieves allegedly go into any old abandoned building and steal copper pipes.

Comment on the impact of these crimes in Randfontein is still awaited from the Randfontein Police spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst.
