DA speaks out about metro postponement

DA says MDB will have a hard time passing the formation of a metro.

The DA has spoken out about the metro being postponed until after the 2016 local elections.

The DA West Rand would like to thank the people in the West Rand for saying no to the metro. Furthermore, Allan Fuchs, DA Constituency Head for Mogale City explained his position on the metro and the postponing thereof.

He started at the very beginning; why the DA was initially against the formation of the metro.

Fuchs quotes section 2 of the municipal systems act and points four criteria for the formation of a metro:

• High population density

• An intense movement of people, goods and services

• Extensive development

• A centre of economic activity with a complex and diverse economy

Based on that, he said that the Municipal Demarcation Board would have a hard time declaring a metro as he does not believe that the West Rand or at least, three of the four municipalities that make up the West Rand meet these requirements.

He said even if the metro discussion is on the table again after the 2016 elections, they will still fight against it and could take it as far as court because the West Rand does not meet the criteria.

With this in mind he says that he is not opposed to the idea of a metro in essence and that he could maybe support a metro if the merging municipalities were in financial good standing; if they had proper financial nodes in place.

He said that it is not the idea of the metro that they are completely opposed to but rather, who runs it.
