SA women’s hockey captain retires

Marsha Cox retires after over 300 matches and 300 caps.

Marsha Cox, 32, born Marsha Marescia and captain of the South African National Women’s Hockey team has announced her retirement after 14 years.

Marsha made her debut in the national team at the young age of 18 and has since played over 300 matches. She is also capped well over 300 on the field.

Marsha has competed at four Commonwealth Games and was part of the SA team that finished in fourth place at the games 2014.

She has been selected for the International Hockey Federation World XI three times in 2007, 2009 and 2010.

In her retirement speech she said,

It is difficult to make this decision, however, I feel blessed to make it with a happy heart as I look back at the last 14 years with a deep gratitude. This is just the end of my journey as a player but I look forward to staying involved as a player’s representative and also other levels of involvement in the game,”

Marsha currently lives in the Netherlands with her husband, Alex Cox, Dutch premier women’s field hockey coach and assistant coach to the London 2012 gold-medal winning Dutch women’s hockey team.

It has been rumored that Marsha will take time off to have her first child after which she might consider playing in the Dutch Premier League.
