Teine holds on for victory against Wits

Goal kicking plays key role in home team's 31-29 win over Wits University.

Mapogo Teine, Randfontein Rugby Club first team and the town’s pride let Wits University supporters hear their roar when they dared play the team on their home ground on Saturday 8 August.

Teams from all the Club’s age groups battled it out against the club from Johannesburg with all matches being a gruelling test of stamina and skills.

After both the Randfontein third and second teams lost to Wits, Mapogo Teine had supporters smiling again with a 31-29 victory over the students.

The first few minutes of the first half were rather slow as it seemed both teams were sizing up each other. However, it wasn’t long before Wits scored the first try but failed to convert for the extra two points. Shortly afterwards Randfontein followed with a converted try of their own to lead 7-5.

The game then went from one end of the field to the other and kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Both teams went on to score a converted try with Randfontein leading 14-12 at the break.

Inside the Mapogo Teine’s change room captain Rudi Marx gave the team a heartfelt talk. He told them they may be leading but that Wits scored after every mistake they made.

Wits seemed to have walked back onto the field with a vengeance and scored two tries barely 10 minutes into the second half.

The Wits team was starting to get ahead of themselves before Teine struck back with a try at a time and eventually ended up in the lead.

There was drama in the dying minutes of the game as Wits scored in the final minute but again failed to convert.
