Rubbish dumpers urged to stop

Councillor says dumpers are making Randgate look like a dump site.

DA Ward Councillor for the Randgate area, Sina Erasmus, has had it with dumpers in the Randgate business area.

Erasmus saw garbage being dumped on street corners in the Randgate business area and began to put up big handwritten no dumping signs to curb the dumping.

She said the dumping stopped in some areas but not in others. The spot in particular was on the corner of van Deventer and Botha Streets in Randgate opposite where Roy Harris Estates used to be.

Under the sign Erasmus wrote lay garbage on the sidewalk some of which were in black bags, others just tossed on the kerb. Erasmus feels the garbage takes away from the aesthetic value of the Randgate business area.

According to Erasmus, businesses in the area are supposed to get rid of their refuse by putting them in black backs on the designated spots in the mornings before the municipality comes to take it away to ensure the rubbish does not lay there the entire day. The municipality comes at around 11am.

She further says the spots are specifically for businesses and not for residents in the area as their refuse is supposed to be collected once a week on a specific day.

You can’t blame the municipality for this one because they come and fetch the rubbish on these corners every morning but people just come and dump their rubbish at all hours of the day and some of the people are not even supposed to leave their rubbish here,” she said.

Erasmus urges all business owners in Botha Street to get rid of their refuse the proper way.
