Man found hanging from razor-wire fence

Six arrested in connection with the murder, three others still on the run

A security officer was killed brutally while at least two others were injured critically at South Deep Mine’s Slam Dam shaft on Old Vereeniging Road, Westonaria on Saturday 8 August.

Captain Siphiwe Ndlovu, spokesperson for the Westonaria Police confirmed the officer was found hanging from a razor-wire fence.

Five suspects in their early thirties were arrested after the brutal killing.

Ndlovu said,

This happened after the Westonaria Police responded to a shooting-in-progress complaint at the South Deep Mine the day before at about 9.10pm. At the scene of the crime police saw a security officer’s lifeless body hanging from a razor-wire fence. Paramedics later certified him dead. They also found another security officer critically injured.”

While on the scene, the police received information that another officer, who was chasing after the suspects’ get-away car, was injured at Jachtfontein Msewawa informal settlement.

On arrival police found the third security officer, in his company car, with a head injury. Paramedics once again were called in. They stabilised the officer and took him to hospital. He is in a critical but stable condition.

The police worked throughout the night following up on leads, and it led to the arrest of one suspect. One handgun was recovered at Poortjie and another four suspects were arrested at Speru-peru informal settlement. Stolen copper cables to the value of R49 665 also were recovered at the informal settlement.

On Monday 10 August the sixth suspect, a 29-year-old, handed himself over to the police. The next day all the suspects appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court facing murder, attempted murder, possession of stolen property and armed robbery charges. Their hearing was postponed until 20 October.

The Westonaria Police are looking for three other suspects who are on the run. Anyone with any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects, please contact Warrant Officer Motlale at the Westonaria Police Station or on 076 421 6500.
