‘Stream is not for drinking purposes’

Municipality responds to wave of pollution.

The Randfontein Local Municipality has responded to the recent onslaught on Randfontein’s water.

“The Randfontein Local Municipality prides itself on providing quality and and acceptable level of water to all its residents,” Tshidiso Tlharipe, spokesperson for the Randfontein Executive Mayor said.

With regard to the Greenhills stream that has been in the spotlight for the past five years, he said,

We were notified of the pollution in the stream; went out to take samples. We also took samples of an industry we suspected of being the polluter and are awaiting the results from the laboratory that has analysed it. The results will guide the decision the municipality must take on the matter.”

Regarding farmers suffering losses as a result of the pollution, Tlharipe told the Herald that the water from the stream is “not for drinking purposes – neither for human beings nor livestock. The farmers are responsible for providing safe water to their livestock,” he said.

The Greenhills stream and another stream lower down run right through farming properties. Making the water inaccessible to livestock is a task on its own, especially for those farmers whose animals are on a free-range diet.

The water may be said not to be fit for drinking purposes, however this does not provide a solution to farmers or residents with fish in the dams on their properties, as they have no option but to use the water.
