W’aria Municipality in the spotlight

Service delivery projects in W'aria assessed during Provincial Week.

The Westonaria Local Municipality received a visit from the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) to asses the state of service delivery in the area.

The NCOP visited all local municipalities on the West Rand during Provincial Week from 21 to 24 July, their goal being to represent all the country’s provinces in the national sphere.

“NCOP Gauteng delegation together with members of the Gauteng Legislature and local councillors visited various sites in Westonaria,” said Kgabane Madiehe, spokesperson for the Westonaria Executive Mayor.

The following were assessed in Westonaria:

• Delivery of basic services to communities

• Financial viability – quality of financial statements, credit rating, revenue base, revenue collection rate, billing systems and debt to state entities including that which other state entities owe to the municipality

• Local economic development – targeted economic sectors and initiatives

• Governance – compliance with legislation, political stability, interventions, administrative deficiencies and malpractices such as maladministration and corruption

• Spending on the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG)

According to Madiehe,

The delegation started at the Hannes van Niekerk water project plant where the Executive Mayor for the Westonaria Local Municipality, Nonkoliso Tundzi gave an explanation on how the water treatment plant works as well as the process of cleaning and distributing water.”

The delegation proceeded to the multi-million Simunye gymnasium and multi-purpose centre. The gymnasium has been completed while the multi-purpose centre is under construction.

The last projects visited were the Waterpan waterline and reservoir and the near-completed Zuurbekom multi-purpose centre.

After the visits the delegation will compile a report that will be debated in the NCOP and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for adoption. NCOP then will engage the local, provincial and national spheres of government based on the raised issues, so that they can be addressed,” Madiehe said.
