Steps to be taken against dumpers

Municipality to track down and take steps against garden services and residents who dump.

What looks like a garden service dump site near an unfinished municipal project has been identified and the ward councillor for the area says lawbreakers will be dealt with.

The dump site is just off Lazaar Avenue in Randgate on a nondescript dirt road leading to the Droogeheuwel water reservoir.

Both sides of the dirt road are littered with mostly gardening service refuse. Black bags filled with grass and leaves lay in between books and discarded documents.

Alwyn van Tonder, the DA Ward Councillor for the area said, “Residents should stop dumping their garden refuse in the area because the municipality will take steps against those who violate Randfontein’s by-laws.

It’s not going to be too difficult to track down the responsible parties. A lot of the people that use the responsible gardening company’s services’ details get mixed up in the rubbish and they risk being fined,” he said.

Van Tonder added there was previously an issue with this particular area and he proceeded to report the issue to the Randfontein Local Municipality. For a while the area was clean but that dumping there has recently picked up again.

I have approached the municipality with the solution to the issue. We should make the area inaccessible to perpetrators, it’s the only way we can keep them from dumping here.”
