R’fontein’s service delivery checked by province

Mohlakeng and Toekomsrus highlighted for provincial visits.

During the past week, Randfontein and the rest of the West Rand have played host to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) for them to carry out their Provincial Week.

The NCOP was established to ensure the country’s provinces are represented in the national sphere.

The role of Provincial Week is to achieve this mandate. The way in which the provincial week came about was through the first preparatory workshop for the launch of the NCOP in 1996.

Members of the NCOP have the opportunity to interact with provinces and report back on their activities and projects and to obtain new mandates on issues to be placed on the national agenda. Members are regularly visited in order for the NCOP to view members’ projects and service delivery in the community.

Lastly, public meetings are held in order to interact with communities to hear what they have to say about service delivery in their municipality.

The theme of the West Rand provincial week held from 21 to 24 July, was ‘Advancing the developmental agenda of municipalities for a better life for our people.’

The Randfontein Local Municipality put forward the following projects for the NCOP to visit:

• Mohlakeng Extension 11 sub station and feeder line

• Mohlakeng road rehabilitation

• Badirile Housing Project

• Toekomsrus Multi-purpose Centre

Once all sites are visited and assessed, the NCOP will put forward recommendations for the selected projects in order to see where they can assist if assistance is needed and to see whether funding used on the projects are used correctly.

The DA also has room to make suggestions as to what they think needs attention within the municipality to hold the municipality accountable for delivering services to the community.

The DA highlighted:

• The incomplete water tower in Randgate
