Strong support for metro

We will first listen to the people before making a decision – Municipal Demarcation Board.

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) visited Randfontein on Tuesday to hear what the people had to say about the West Rand merger.

The meeting was well attended by residents from Randfontein as well as political and faith based groups in the area.

Mpumi Mpofu, an MDB board member stated they will first hear what the people have to say before making a decision about the merger.

We are obligated by law to hear what the people have to say and treat every submission whether for or against the metro the same,” Mpofu said.

From what was voiced by the people, there is a strong support for the metro in the Randfontein area.

A small number of those who attended the meeting were not in favour of the merger, among them were DA Councillors in the area as well as West Rand chairperson, Evert du Plessis.

The MDB will be visiting all four of the local municipalities that could amalgamate into a metro if the board decides to redetermine their boundaries.

These municipalities include Randfontein, Westonaria, Mogala City and Merafong.
