Want to know how to prevent house robberies?

Westonaria police issue helpful preventative measures to combat property theft.

Westonaria police would like to warn residents about house robberies and theft in the area and have issued preventative measures that should be followed to combat this crime.

Captain Ndlovu, spokesperson for the Westonaria police explained,

Property crimes such as theft, housebreaking, shoplifting, handbag and cellphone snatching and theft out of motor vehicle lead to unnecessary suffering and impoverishment.”

He also touches on stolen goods and creating a market for thieves to steal from people.

If you buy stolen goods, more victims will suffer because you provide a market for these goods and incentive for criminals to keep stealing them. Thieves go about stealing goods to meet demand for stolen goods, they commit other crimes along their way and even murder or assault a witness or helpless victim.”

Preventative measures:
Know all emergency numbers
• Make provision for good outside lighting, but switch the lights off during the day
• Keep a watchdog – they are a good early warning system
• Install the best security you can afford such as security gates and keep the gates locked at all times
• When approaching your house entrance by foot or car, ensure that it is safe to enter and that you have not been followed. Be aware of people loitering at your home’s entrance
• Know your neighbours and build a relationship of mutual trust and support. When going away, inform them
• Keep cash and valuables in banks or safe
• If your house alarm goes off, you hear strange noises, or your dogs bark, switch on the outside lights
• Report to the police any suspicious characters who pose a threat
