Greenhills stream possibly contaminated

‘We went to take a sample from the suspected source of the contamination’ – Councillor.

The Greenhills stream is overflowing with milky-white water and it is not the first time it has happened.

The stream has become infamous in the pages of the Herald. The earliest report on the stream dates back to 6 May, 2011. It is located on the corner of Greenhills Avenue and Raven Road.

When the Herald visited the stream on Wednesday (16 July), the water was not recognisable as water any longer as a thick layer of what is believed to be fat, lay in bubbles on the surface of the water.

DA Ward Councillor, Peter Dick was on the scene once again and said enough was enough.

The municipality was called and they took a sample of the water in order to track where the contaminant could be coming from.

I am demanding rehabilitation of the vlei. It’s looks like 10 years worth of rehabilitation that needs to be done,” Dick told the Herald.

“We went to take a sample from the suspected source of the contamination. Hopefully this can be resolved speedily.”

He continued to say that the West Rand District Municipality was informed of the matter.

The Herald investigated the area around the stream and found a pond with orange-coloured water, a separate pond with raw sewage, and lastly where the stream runs through a residential area.

There were no visible signs of animal life on the banks of the stream or around the ponds of polluted water.
