Primary school receives 1 500 bicycles

'Project has to date has donated over 16 000 bicycles to pupils' — Department of transport.

West Rand District Executive Mayor, Mpho Nawa together with the Gauteng MEC for roads and transport, Ismail Vadi handed over 1 500 bicycles to Isiqalo Primary School pupils.

The handover, which occurred on Thursday last week (25 June) was part of the Shovakalula Bicycle Project which is a national initiative by the department of transport.

“It aims to provide pupils who have to travel far distances (more than 3km) to school to get around easier,” said Octavia Mamabolo, Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport’s Head of Communication.

In addition, the project is also there to promote non-motorised transport to enable communities to access opportunities and to promote cycling as a low cost mobility solution.

“The project has to date has donated over sixteen thousands bicycles throughout Gauteng to pupils who meet the set qualification criteria to alleviate their mobility constraints and providing ease of access to learning institutions,” Mamabolo said.
