Baby born in cave on West Rand

'She went into labor inside the caves.'

The unthinkable happened when a pregnant woman went into labor last Friday when she took a tour of the Sterkfontein Caves.

Located in Krugersdorp, the Sterkfontein caves is a big tourist attraction.

Pieter Rossouw, spokesperson for ER24 confirmed, “While the woman was on the tour, she felt a sharp shooting pain in her abdomen and she then went into labor, deep inside the caves. ER24 paramedics from the Johannesburg West branch were dispatched to the call.

“When they arrived on scene they found that a beautiful baby girl had been born. The successful delivery had been assisted by a first aid expert, that is appointment for medical emergencies during tours in the cave.

“The baby girl is pre-maturely born by about two months but in good health. ER24 paramedics transported the mother and baby to Leratong Hospital for further assessment.”
