King and queens of the ring

Close to 100 young boxers go up against each other for the first time in an event hosted by Randgate Boxing Club.

At least 90 boxers flew like butterflies and stung like bees when the Gauteng Development Tournament was held at the Randgate Boxing Club on Saturday 20 June.

There were at least 45 fights that day with girls and boys in action. Willie Jansen, Pieter Moller, Nicky Ness and Paul Fouche were some of the judges while Lourens Ellis was one of the referees.

The boxing clubs that participated were PSAP, Witpoortjie Vikings, Krugersdorp West, Randgate, Kempton Park, Wonderboy, Brotherhood, Bert Collins, Transnet Engineering, HTS Tuine, Mofaya, Tsepong Ironside, Klipfontein, Booysens, Eldorado Park, South Hills, Sparks, South Hills, Boksburg, Newville, Golden Gloves, Skylark, Vaal, Ferreiras, Hugenote and Olympians Boxing Club.

The weight classes ranged from 23kg to 80+ kg. It was also the first formal boxing fight event for most of the competitors.

These development tournaments are held monthly and teach young boxers where they need improvement such as in their confidence levels. Their coaches then have the opportunity to identify the areas in which they could help better the boxers’ skills.

In the first three minutes they also see how fit they really are and physically experience their strength.

The first fight started off with Phillip du Plessis from PSAP competing against Michael Vorster from Vaal in the 64kg weight class. Michael Vorster proudly won the battle.

The winners from the various clubs are as follows:
