Rosemary Kahn hits the big 70

Nursery school goes big on a special day.

Rosemary Kahn Nursery School celebrated their official 70th birthday this past week in Randfontein with cake, candles and pointy birthday hats.

Every classroom in the school was decorated with party decorations.

Pupils had to make some of the decorations themselves — the school asked them to make their own party hats. With the smaller pupils, parents had to step in to make the hats but the giant hats on the small heads were much enjoyed by the pupils.

Cupcakes were lined up on each of their desks. Faces and fingers were dirtied with white and dark chocolate.

Pupils rehearsed and rehearsed and sang the school a happy birthday song. Once the song was done, cheeks were puffed up and candles were blown and of course, they could not wait to tuck into their cupcakes.

The school was founded in 1946. It was first located in the area where Friendship Haven now stands but had to move to Robinson.

According to Elzeri Wright, who used to work at the school, the school was the first nursery school established in Randfontein.

How the school got to the peculiar name was through the founder, a Jewish woman who had a love for children. Kahn passed away in 1991.

Following her death, Elize Brandt was the principal of the school from 1973 to 1995. In 1996 Brandt gave over to Ilsa Otto who is currently still the principal of the school.
