Man, 71, robbed of R10 000 at ATM

Suspect(s) spend over R5 000 at liquor stores.

A 71-year-old man fell victim to an ATM robbery at the Nedbank ATM in Greenhills over the weekend.

According to Johan Vermeulen, the elderly man who was robbed, a man was standing in front of him in line when he walked off but Vermeulen noticed his transaction was not completed as the screen was still busy.

He proceeded to tell the man in passing that he should complete his transaction after which the man somehow got hold of his card and told Vermeulen that the system has changed and the card needs to be inserted a certain way — the suspect proceeded to ‘assist’ Vermeulen.

Minutes after his encounter with the man, Vermeulen received cellphone notifications of money leaving his account – this continued later the night.

In total, Vermeulen claims they took R10 000 out of his account.

Vermeulen stated some of the transactions he saw on his notifications were made at liqour stores. R3 535 was spent at Le Melon Liqour in Orlando West. In addition to this, R2 145 was spent at Boyz Liqour in Soweto. However it could also have been at another branch of Boyz Liquor in Eldorado Park.
